La White Bergenia (also commonly known as “elephant’s ears” or “St Joseph’s flower”) It is a splendid evergreen perennial herbaceous plant, renowned for its incredible hardiness and its ability to brighten up the shadier areas of the garden.
- Bergenia ‘Bressingham White’: The most famous and sought-after white variety. It produces pure white bell-shaped flowers that bloom from buds initially tinged with the softest shade of pink.
Aesthetic Characteristics
- Ornamental foliage: It has large, leathery, glossy, dark green leaves. As the winter chill sets in, the leaves tend to take on striking reddish-purple or bronze hues.
- Early flowering: The flowers appear between late winter and early spring (usually between March and May), rising in a compact cluster above the foliage.
Growing Guide
- Exhibition: It prefers partial shade or full shade (ideally under deciduous trees or shrubs). It tolerates direct sunlight provided it is not the scorching midday sun of the height of summer.
- Land: It adapts to any soil, but prefers fertile, moist and, above all, well-drained soil to prevent the rhizomes from rotting.
- Resistance: It is an almost indestructible plant; it can withstand extremely harsh climates and temperatures well below freezing (down to -40°C).
- Use in the garden: Ideal as ground cover for borders, rockeries and slopes, or for filling large pots on sheltered terraces.
