PLANT

Myrcianthes pungens is a medium-sized tree, can reach a maximum height of 10 m, with many pubescent branches. The leaves are alternate, stiff, oblong oval, obtuse and acuminate, 4-7 cm, with a strong green colour on the outside and lighter on the underside. It has a rough, light brown bark with abundant removable bark scales. Internally, the bark is whitish in colour and emits a soft aroma when cut. The flowers are tiny, whitish, abundant and aromatic.

FRUIT

The fruits are black in colour, the size and appearance of a cherry. The texture and taste are reminiscent of American grapes. They can be used for the preparation of jellies and syrups. Fruiting is abundant; the seeds of the fallen fruit at the base of the tree germinate very easily.

CULTIVATION

Guabiju is native to tropical areas, but at altitudes above 1000 m, so it also grows well in subtropical and warm temperate climates. The optimum temperatures for the development of Guabiju are 18-25 °C in summer and not less than 5 °C in winter.

MATURATION

Flowering occurs in May-June; fruit ripening from August-September until October.
