PLANT

Moringa oleifera is a plant belonging to the Moringaceae family, widespread in much of the planet's tropical and equatorial belt. It reaches a height of 4 to 7 m, but with deep, fertile soil it also exceeds 10 m; its trunk is erect or branched from the base, soft and spongy; the wood is weak, the branches, thin and intertwined, are pendulous.
The leaves are pluricompound (each leaf consists of several leaflets), each leaflet is imparipinnate with opposite oval leaflets and a terminal leaflet; the leaves are rather robust, light green on the back, glaucous (pale) green on the reverse.
The roots have a strong radish smell and taste, hence the name 'horseradish tree'.
The flowers are small and numerous, creamy white in colour, excellent nectar producers for bees, and of moderate decorative value. In a tropical environment the plant may flower two or three times a year.

FRUIT

The fruits are large pods with a triangular cross-section, tapered and pointed (30-45 cm long), green and soft when unripe; when ripe they take on an ochre and then brown colour and a woody texture.
The brown seeds contained look like beans, but are round and have a papery membrane; there are 16 to 22 per pod, while each tree produces 20 to 80 pods.

PROPERTIES AND USES

Virtually the entire plant is edible and of considerable interest from a nutritional point of view.

The leaves can be eaten and are very rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. They have a slightly spicy and pleasant taste even in their raw state. They are often prepared in salads; they can also be cooked like spinach. They contain 25 per cent by weight of protein, more than eggs and twice as much as cow's milk, four times as much vitamin A as carrots and almost eight times as much vitamin C as oranges, three times as much potassium as bananas.

In addition to being used directly for human consumption, the leaves can also be used as fodder for animal husbandry. If the leaves are used as fodder together with the residual paste from the extraction of the oil, they are a good food replenisher for herbivorous animals, whose vital condition appears to be improved.

As for the fruits, the most widespread and frequent use is boiling the unripe pods (called 'drumsticks'), which taste like asparagus. In Siddha medicine, they are considered powerful aphrodisiacs for both sexes.

The seeds are eaten boiled or roasted and taste like chickpeas. The extraction of oil from the seeds is a very important resource: seeds contain 30 to 50% of oil (olives 8 to 20%). The extracted oil contains 65 to 76% of oleic acid, which is the same unsaturated fat as olive oil. The oil is sweet and tasty and does not go rancid, unlike Jatropha oil. It is perfectly suitable for human consumption. When the oils are extracted from the seeds, the residual paste contains 60% of valuable protein. This is an enormous amount when one considers that the residue from the similar processing of soy, a product of fair vegetable protein quality, yields 30 to 35% of protein, whose amino acid range, as with the vast majority of other known vegetables, is incomplete. The protein obtained from the residual paste is suitable for human consumption.

The roots are also edible and have a spicy radish-like flavour. The spicy flavour of the roots is more pronounced than that of the leaves. Similar to horseradish, the common use of roots is as a flavouring, but excessive use is not recommended due to the presence of spiroquine, an alkaloid that interferes with nerve transmission.

The flowers are also edible and are usually prepared in salads.

Moringa is a melliferous plant, and therefore honey can be produced from its flowers.

Of great importance is the fact that the protein content of the plant parts is complete, i.e. the plant parts contain the whole range of amino acids, including the valuable ones. This fact is almost unique among plants and Moringa oleifera can be defined as the only plant known today with such characteristics.

These characteristics make moringa an interesting plant from a humanitarian point of view, as it has great potential to fight hunger, malnutrition, and poverty.

CULTIVATION

They withstand short frosts, especially the adult plants, but cold weather of long duration seriously interferes with growth and fruiting, although it does not kill the plant.
The plant remains in vegetation even in very dry weather; in its environment, it is often the only plant that remains green in dry weather. As a defence against an extremely dry climate, the plant loses its leaves, which reform with the return of moisture.
Moringa is considered to be cultivable in the orange climate zone, certainly preferring the warmer and more sheltered areas of this zone for significant cultivation. However, even in European areas with very moderate frosts it is possible to grow Moringa outdoors all year round.
The entire outer part dies if exposed to temperatures at or below zero for any length of time, but if the underground part manages to survive, the plant vegetates vigorously again in the spring.

I managed to buy varieties I had been looking for for a long time and the order was processed sooner than I expected. A small note for the future: perhaps on the boxes containing the plants it would be useful to indicate in which direction they are to be kept, otherwise you run the risk of having your plants delivered and finding them upside down.

Perfect packaging

I had a little difficulty initially with the payment with the prepaid card. I found the packaging really perfect. The only thing was the decidedly young seedling for the price paid. I would also have paid more for an older one. Thanks anyway for everything.

A visit to piccolifrutti.it

Good morning. I approached the gentlemen at venditapiccolifrutti.it because of their proven experience in the horticultural field. They were very kind. The delivery took place at home even though the owners were not obliged to do so. I therefore thank Andrea, by the way my old schoolmate, and his son Valentino for the quality of the plants, the service rendered and the information given to me.
