PLANT

Philodendrons were first discovered in the 1600s in the rainforests of Brazil. Philodendron means 'tree lover' in Greek. Philodendrons are a diverse genus of 489 species, most commonly found in tropical and humid climates. They are known for their large, beautiful leaves and can be climbing plants, but are commonly found as houseplants.
Philodendron Birkins grows best in humid conditions, moist soil and indirect sunlight.
Philodendron Birkins has evergreen foliage, so the vareigated leaves survive throughout the year. It has dark, green, glossy leaves with creamy white striped variegation that appear when the leaves become adult. These unique leaves can grow up to 20 centimetres long and are pointed oval in shape.

CURIOSITIES

Philodendron Birkins does not exist in nature, it arose from a rare mutation of Philodendron Rojo Congo. It was a spontaneous chimeric mutation, i.e. when one cell mutates near the apical dome, so all other cells replicate the mutation.
The leaf was separated from the mother plant and propagated. Unlike many other variegated plants, the propagation was surprisingly stable, which means that it retained its variegated colours.

CULTIVATION

As with many houseplants, Philodendron Birkin thrives best in bright spots with indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can damage the leaves and areas with low light can stunt growth.

Watering is probably the most important part of your Philodendron Birkin care routine. They like moist soil, but will struggle if they are constantly watered. It is advisable to check the humidity of the soil before watering to ensure that it has dried sufficiently.
Since they are native to the tropics they will thrive in a warm environment away from cold air currents.
