PLANT
The apricot tree (Prunus armeniaca L.) is a tree belonging to the Rosaceae family.
It is a medium-sized deciduous plant, 5 to 7 metres high, with some exceptions of 8.5 metres.
The leaves are heart-shaped with a doubly serrated margin. The stem has diverging branches and the younger branches have reddish bark.
The flowers have a pentamerous symmetrical calyx and corolla, are pinkish-white, single or paired. Flowering occurs, as in all Prunus, before leafing.
The fruits are velvety, dark yellow-orange drupes with a tendency to faded red in the more mature fruits. As with all fruit plants, they are green, hard and difficult to detach from the tree under conditions of poor or no drupe ripening.
FRUIT
Fruit of medium-large size with average 50-60 grams. Oblate shape, slightly asymmetrical, apex slightly depressed, peduncular cavity medium wide and deep, suture line slightly hollow.
Smooth skin, light yellow-white colour and light red-pink overcolour near the peduncular cavity, scarce and medium-sized lenticels.
Light yellow-whitish flesh, not very firm, fine texture, semi-fine, large stone cavity, excellent flavour, sweet and medium acidity.
CULTIVATION
The apricot tree can easily be grown in family gardens and requires fresh soil rich in organic matter. The apricot tree is a plant that requires a lot of light for its growth. It therefore prefers sunny locations and does not tolerate shade even for a few hours a day.
